How Long Does Botox Last and What Are the Benefits?

Botox is an FDA approved treatment that relaxes facial muscles giving you a much younger appearance. One question we are frequently asked is, how long does Botox last? Before we answer that, let’s discuss the many benefits and uses for this very effective treatment.

How Long Does Botox Last

What is Botox?

Botox is a botulinum toxin type A (BTA) product that was first introduced in 1980. It has become a very popular treatment for wrinkles as well as other issues. Here at Medical Cosmetics we use two types of BTAs, Botox and Dysport, and both have similar effects.

Your muscles use a neurotransmitter known as acetylcholine in order to move. This treatment inhibits the action of this neurotransmitter, which reduces the function of your muscles wherever it is injected. Though the effect is temporary, continued treatments can help prevent the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

How Long Does Botox Last?

The effects typically last between three and four months, and the length of time will vary depending on the individual. After we perform the treatment, it usually takes between one and two weeks before the full effect is noticeable. Clients who have regular injections can prevent lines and wrinkles from forming by adhering to a treatment schedule.

The Procedure

The treatment itself takes between 15 and 30 minutes depending on the individual and the areas to be treated. The skin is thoroughly cleansed, and then the injections are made in the specific areas to be treated. A typical injection pattern is four or five sites on each side of the forehead and two or three sites around the eyes to relax crow’s feet. The needles used are tiny, so most clients experience minimal discomfort.

Botox And Sweating

Excessive sweating, also known as Hyperhidrosis, can also be treated with Botox. Like the treatment for wrinkles, we inject Botox in the muscles around the armpit, inhibiting excess perspiration dramatically. How long does Botox last for sweating? About the same time as it does for wrinkles, three to four months depending on the individual. For a longer-term solution for excessive sweating ask us about our MiraDry treatment.
