If you’ve noticed that your skin often gets red for no apparent reason, you may suffer from a condition called rosacea. This chronic, inflammatory skin condition affects around 14 million Americans and is often found on the face. If left untreated, rosacea can become worse, so we recommend making a one-on-one skin consultation with our Lancaster aesthetics company.
What Causes Rosacea?
Rosacea is often mistaken for acne, eczema, or a skin allergy, however, it’s simply an incurable condition that leaves the face red and (many times) bumpy. While it’s not entirely certain what causes the condition, there are several things that specialists believe may contribute to it.
For example, those with a light skin color are affected more than those with medium or darker skin colors. In addition, those with a close relative that suffers from rosacea are also likely to “inherit” the condition. Some believe that a certain bacteria called H. pylori, which is found in the gut, can be a contributing factor. This bacteria stimulates the production of bradykinin, a polypeptide that causes blood vessels to dilate.
There are many different things (many of them everyday habits) that can unfortunately trigger rosacea. Some of the most popular include:
- Temperature extremes
- Spicy food
- Hot drinks
- Dairy products
- Some medications
If you have rosacea, you likely experience one or several of these symptoms during a flare-up:
- Persistent redness
- Hot, flushed skin
- Bumps, papules, and/or pustules
- Eye problems (dryness, irritation, swollen lids)
- Thickened nose skin
- Visible blood vessels
- Facial swelling
Reducing the Appearance of Rosacea
While there are topical creams and antibiotics that can provide some level of relief, our Lancaster aesthetics company offers facial treatments that can target redness and small blood vessels and reduce their appearance. Our laser treatments (including our KTP laser and our StarLux IPL photo facial) are virtually painless and are perfect for delicate areas of skin such as the face and chest. Once the treatment is complete, you’ll enjoy beautiful, rejuvenated skin.
