Avoid Premature Aging, Breakouts, and More
We all lead busy lives and along the way, we make mistakes like eating too much sugar or forgetting to put sunscreen on; while some things are known for damaging your skin, others are more surprising. Here are 15 unexpected things that ruin your skin, from our Lancaster aesthetics company:
Sleeping in Your Makeup
If you don’t take your makeup off at the end of the day, it can lead to clogged pores and bacteria, which can lead to acne. In addition, you’ll have a dirty pillowcase for the next time you sleep, which is never a good thing.
Too Little Water
Water is not only great for your body, it’s great for your skin. Drinking water keeps your skin hydrated and to boost elasticity and collagen production. Drinking too little of it will dehydrate it, which can lead to premature aging.
Constantly going on diets and then off of them again can have a bad effect on your skin. By gaining and losing weight frequently, you loosen your skin and create sagging and stretch marks.
Too Much Chlorine
We know summer is a great time to hit the pool, but if you’re in there too often, you can dry out your skin. The chlorine can also react with certain body lotions or cleansers and cause a bad reaction.
Too Much Alcohol
Whether it’s wine, liquor, or beer, drinking lots of alcohol can dehydrate your skin and make it more prone to wrinkles. If you’re going to drink alcohol, make sure you drink lots of water with it.
While an occasional sauna visit is good for relaxing and clearing out your pores, too many visits can mean trouble. Excessive steam and heat can break down the elasticity and collagen that’s in your skin.
When you get a pimple, we know it’s tough to leave it alone, but popping pimples can not only push dirt and bacteria back into your pores, but it can also spread that dirt and bacteria to other areas of your face.
Hair products themselves don’t hurt your skin, but if you get them all over your face, they can clog your pores and lead to breakouts. Make sure you cover your face when using hairspray and other products.
Not Getting Enough Sleep
Just like water, sleep can do wonders for your skin. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night can replenish and rehydrate your skin (plus, you’ll look refreshed). Not getting enough can lead to dull skin and clogged pores.
Frowning and Squinting
What better reason to be happy and wear sunglasses? Frowning and squinting can create premature wrinkles and fine lines in your face, so keep up those good spirits and protect your eyes from the sun.
Stress is all-around bad for your skin. Not only can it cause dullness, breakouts, and rashes, but it can also cause fine lines and wrinkles from your facial movements. Do what you can to avoid stressing out and you (and your skin) will be much happier.
Talking on the Phone
If you love talking on the phone and have experienced clogged pores and breakouts along your jawline and cheek, the two are likely related. Your phone harbors dirt and bacteria, so having it against your face is a bad idea.
Not Eating Enough
Don’t bother with crash diets – not only do they not work, but they’re bad for your skin. Not eating enough means you’re not getting enough vitamins and vitamins are the key to healthy, hydrated skin.
Cigarettes (and even second-hand cigarette smoke) can dry out your skin, causing it to sag and wrinkle prematurely. Steer clear of this bad habit altogether.
Too Much Sodium
Salt naturally draws out water, so if you eat too much of it, you can actually pull moisture away from your skin and dehydrate it. Try to limit your sodium intake – for both your skin and your health.
