How to Protect Your Skin from Damaging UV Rays

Did you know that sunshine’s UVA and UVB rays can penetrate your skin and cause both surface and underlying damage any time of the year?

UVB rays are shorter in length and are the culprit behind sunburn while UVA rays are longer in length and can cause premature skin aging such as wrinkling, sagging, and leatheriness. Both types of rays can cause long-term damage like eye damage, skin cancers, dark spots, and more, and they can all happen faster than you think. That’s why it’s important to protect your skin from sun damage.

How to Do It

One of the easiest and most popular ways to protect your skin is to invest in an effective sunscreen. Typically, the higher the sunscreen’s SPF, the better it will protect you from the sun. Here’s how SPF works: If you’re unprotected and it takes 20 minutes for you to start turning red, an SPF 15 sunscreen will theoretically prevent reddening 15 times longer; that means you’ll be protected for about five hours (15 minutes times 20).

You can also look at SPF in terms of percentages: an SPF 15 sunscreen will filter out 93% of UV rays, an SPF 30 will filter out 97% and an SPF 50 will filter out 98%. No sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, so anything over SPF 50 won’t do much better than 98% filtration. By applying sunscreen to all exposed areas of your skin, you can help protect yourself from both UVA and UVB rays; just remember to apply it liberally and frequently for best results.

You can also protect yourself from sun damage by covering up with a sun hat and/or light, breathable clothing. The more fabric protection you have, the less chance that UV rays have to penetrate through to your skin.
