What is Kybella?
Kybella, or deoxycholic acid, is the first and only FDA-approved prescription injection that is used to improve the appearance of submental fat below the neck and chin. The Kybella injections are non-surgical and work by targeting and destroying fat cells to lessen the fullness of the neck and chin area.
When diet and exercise aren’t enough
Submental fat is a common, but undertreated condition among both male and female adults and can be influenced by aging, weight gain, genetics, and more. When diet and exercise aren’t successful in fat reduction, our sagging jowl treatment can help.
At Medical Cosmetics, our Kybella injections are typically administered over several sessions, each a few weeks apart. Most patients experience results in 2-4 sessions, however, up to 6 sessions may be required for some. You’ll receive an injection under your skin directly into the area beneath your chin and neck to make sure the specific area is targeted and your moderate to severe “jowl” fat is reduced.
How it Works
Deoxycholic acid is a molecule that is naturally produced in the body and is commonly used in a variety of fields. When injected into fat cells, the acid works to break them down and eliminate them. Once they’re eliminated, they can no longer store or accumulate fat, which means once Kybella works for you, you likely won’t need retreatment.
Kybella has been used successfully in more than 1,500 people in several clinical studies. Side effects of the treatment are typically mild and include numbness, bruising, pain, swelling, and redness.
Kybella vs. Liposuction
There are several reasons individuals choose Kybella as an alternative to chin liposuction. These include:
- Less invasive
- No anesthesia required
- Little downtime/recovery time
- FDA-approved
- Can be used on little to moderate submental fat
